A note from Pastor Travis 9/30/21

Dear FUMC Family and Friends,

In 1989, Kimberlé Crenshaw introduced a new term into discussions of how we are shaped by our identities, how they overlap and converge, and how they are inter-connected. That term is “intersectional.” This concept reminds us of how both gender and race shape our experiences in the world. It has started important conversations and led to greater understanding.

Over the last few years, theologians have been examining how intersectionality shapes people’s experiences of God and life in religious institutions. Two of those theologians, Grace Ji-Sun Kim and Susan Shaw, have written a wonderfully accessible book on this topic, Intersectional Theology: An Introductory Guide. Don’t let the title fool you: this is a book that is designed for everyone.

We will be holding a study of this book at 12 pm on these Sundays: October 24, October 31, November 7, November 21, and November 28. As an added bonus, on December 4, we will travel to an area New England UMC to hear Dr. Grace Ji-Sun Kim speak. We invite you to join us for an important discussion of these issues of gender and race.

You can order the book by following this link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40988558-intersectional-theology

Peace,

Pastor Travis
