FUMC & The Food Drive
The Food Drive is a Melrose-based, community-driven food rescue nonprofit that works to end food insecurity and food waste on a hyperlocal level. The program distributes recovered, surplus, and donated food to our neighbors in need in Melrose and surrounding towns, including Everett, Malden, Saugus, and Wakefield. Since we started in November 2020, The Food Drive has rescued 80,000 pounds (40 tons) of fresh, wholesome food, which translates to 43,000 greenhouse gases prevented.
FUMC Melrose and The Food Drive have agreed upon a mission partnership, since we are aligned in our commitment to community service, food security, and social and racial justice. Initial plans for our collaboration include a Community Freezer hosted by the church, churchwide mission workdays, hands-on service for children and youth, and a food security network with Melrose community organizations.
