A note from Pastor Travis 1/22/26

This Sunday in worship, we will be reflecting on Matthew 4:12-23, the story of Jesus calling his first disciples.

Matthew’s telling of the call of those first disciples is a story of two kingdoms — the heavenly Kingdom and Rome.

The Biblical scholar Warren Carter reminds us that most of the fishers would have had contracts with the Roman Empire. Such contracts were necessary in order to have a license to fish, and would have required them to supply a percentage of their catch to Roman authorities.

By choosing to drop their nets and follow Jesus to “fish for people” the disciples were aligning themselves with the life-giving presence of God, rather than the Empire that was oppressing them and their people.

It was a radical decision.

It took courage.

It took faith.

Peace and Grace,

Pastor Travis
