A note from Pastor Travis 6/2/22
Dear FUMC Family and Friends,
This Sunday is Pentecost. Early Methodists, following the Anglican tradition, called it Whitsunday, or Whitsun. This practice lasted well into the 20th century. In fact, I have a copy of the 1944 Methodist Book of Worship which calls it Whitsunday. This name comes from the words “White Sunday” and is a reference to the white robes worn by those being baptized on that day.
Easter and Pentecost were traditional days for Baptisms. Both of these days are obvious choices for Baptisms, since they represent the resurrection of Christ and the founding of the church, respectively. Often United Methodists hold Confirmations on Pentecost Sunday for similar symbolic reasons.
This year, our congregation has the joy of celebrating a Baptism on Pentecost! Melody Rose Davidian will be baptized. This is the first Baptism that we have had since we returned to in-person worship. Pentecost is always a day of celebration in our church, and this year the celebration will include welcoming Melody into the life of our faith community.
We invite everyone to join us for our celebration and to wear red (Melody will be wearing white) to celebrate Pentecost. After the service, bring a dish and join us for a potluck as we continue our celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit and the foundation of the Church.
Blessings,
Pastor Travis
