UMW: United Methodist Women @ FUMC
The United Methodist Women is the largest denominational faith organization for women in the world with over 800,000 members. The UMW mission is fostering spiritual growth, developing leaders and advocating for justice. We are a “faith based membership organization of laywomen within the United Methodist Church. We are organized for mission and our members are committed to growing as disciples of Jesus Christ in community with other women and building the lives of women, children and youth. United Methodist Women has been in mission for more than 140 years.”
Our Melrose UMW group belongs to the Metro Boston Hope District. We support our local district with an annual pledge in the fall of the year. Our UMW consists of circles (small groups of women) and members at large. Each meeting starts with the recitation of our pledge which states:
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
We raise funds from circle member pledges and by having yard sales, fundraisers, and bake sales. Our bake sales are very popular events and are held on Palm Sunday and Thanksgiving Sunday each year. Our goal is to use the treasury for various missions. We send the money to UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief. All monies are donated to UMCOR are used entirely for relief purposes, with no monies used for administration purposes.
The FUMC UMW also contributes to the church a pledge of $1,000 each for Easter and Christmas. Contributions are sent to various missions during the year. Bread of Life, Camp Aldersgate, Rolling Ridge, Church Women United, The One Fund in Boston, and the Phillipine Haiyan typhoon are a few of the causes we have donated to in the past few years.
The FUMC-UMW also contributes to the church in a more hands on way each week. It is the UMW who supply the coffee and paper products for the coffee hour on Sundays. The maintenance and cleaning of the kitchenette and the church parlor is also taken care of by UMW members.
Our all church fair is held in the beginning of November each year. FUMC-UMW members, fair committee members, circles, spouses and volunteers, all come together to support and organize our largest fundraiser for the church. For the past several years, all of the proceeds from the fair have been donated back to the church treasury to help fund the programs of the church
Our mission to the community comes in early December with the UMW Christmas Tea, which is fully funded by our chapter. Invitations are sent out to all of the local churches in Melrose and surrounding towns inviting the women in their congregations to be our guests for tea. Sandwiches and homemade desserts are served to about 100 women from the various churches, followed by entertainment. This past year, we were pleased to have Sara Leedy, a pianist who provided the entertainment, and the guests joined in singing Christmas carols.
The FUMC-UMW has contributed greatly to the beautification of our physical spaces within the church, re-decorating and updating our church parlor, and donating new furniture and window treatments to beautify our parsonage.
We welcome all women of the church to attend a meeting anytime or simply just to have any questions answered that you may have regarding the UMW. We look forward to seeing you all.
